Western classical music came about through a combination of religious and classical music. From early rhythmical chants, it developed into early popular music. Minimalist music is known for it's simple melody, bass lines, chords, tempo, and rhythms. The term, “classical music” did not appear until the early 19th century.

The term minimalist was applied to music in the late 20th century. It was used to describe music which repeated simple pattens at great length.

One example of 20th century western classical music was composed by Steve Reich in 1936 named “Piano Phase”
It featured a piano playing a short pattern of notes repeatedly; at the same time, a recording of the pianist plays back at a speed slightly slower than the original so that the pianist gradually falls out of time with their own recording.

From my research, I have found that minimalist western classical music became more popular during the mid to late 20th century as people searched for ways to make new kinds of sounds.

They experimented with early synthesisers and physical manipulation of tapes and instruments. An example of this is a song called “Song of the youths” from 1956 which is a type of minimalist western classical music by Stockhausen. In the late 20th century, electronic dance music became very popular, this was music based on a loop system and this was named “Minimal Techno” This became a very big genre on music in the 1980-1990

Some very popular western classical bands (such as The Velvet Underground and the Beach Boys) within the 20th century embedded the minimalist style into their music. This music then caught on with fans of jazz, rock and blues which helped boost the popularity of minimalist music

I have concluded from the research I have done about the minimalist genre of music that it has a crossover into many different styles of music such as jazz, rock, blues and EDM (Electronic Dance Music) All of these styles were very popular in the mid to late 20th century and all contained a form of minimalist style
